Kombupalayam Komarappa Gounder Ramalingam was a student of Sri Sankara Vidyasala Higher Secondary School, Kodumudi, from 1947 to 1953. He used to travel by train from Kolanalli to Kodumdi, in the morning and go back by train in the evening. From the time, he joined the school in 1947; he always stood first in all the subjects. In the SSLC examination he was awarded the “Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts Teachers’ Guild” gold medal for obtaining the first mark. He did his intermediate studies in St. Joseph’s College, Trichy, and M.B.B.S. in Stanley Medical College, Chennai and D.L.O. at Madras Medical College specializing in the field on ENT.
In the year 1963 he went to America and studied in the New York University and later he returned to England to do his F.R.C.S. which he passed in 1967. After returning from England, he settled in Chennai and worked as a Honorary Professor of ENT in the Government General Hospital and Madras Medical College for 25 years.
He started an ENT Hospital named after him which is called KKR ENT Hospital & Research Institute. He also started a charitable ENT hospital in the name of his mother called Chinnammal ENT Medical Education and Research Foundation.
He has held many honorary posts like President of the Indian ENT Association. He founded the Indian Society of Otology which is very popular and has over 1500 life members. He has been a popular teacher and has many publications both in national and international journals. He has been awarded the Life Time Achievement Award by the All India ENT Association. The text book on ENT which he has written is very popular and is being followed in most of the Indian Universities. He has also written a text book for Post Graduates which is equally popular.
He conducts free camps and sees many patients completely free of cost and also does free ENT operations for deserving patients. Recently he has started another hospital called KKR ENT SuperSpecialty Hospital in Maduravoyal. His institute is recognized by the National Board of Examination, New Delhi, for doing post graduation in ENT surgery.
His wife Dr. Vimala Ramalingam has been President of the Indian Red Cross Society. His son Dr. Ravi Ramalingam is a popular teacher and is a very busy ENT Surgeon. His daughter Shoba and her family has settled in Los Angeles, California, USA. Her two sons are studying in USA.
